Nokia 3 starts getting a new update

HMD Global has begun rolling out a new update to the Nokia 3 smartphone. Weighing in at around 345MB, it’s mainly a security update that brings along Android fixes for the month of December. This makes the Nokia 3 the first Nokia-branded HMD smartphone to get the December patch.

The low-end phone currently runs Android 7.1.1. Although the company had initially said it’d get the Android 7.1.2 update, it was recently confirmed the device will directly jump to Oreo, something which should happen this month.

The MIUI 9 global rollout continues with Xiaomi Mi Max and its India-exclusive variant the Xiaomi Mi Max Prime.

The upgrade version is V9.1.1.0.NBCMIEI for the Mi Max and is around 1.5 GB in size. The Prime version should get V9.1.2.0.NBDMIEI but the package is essentially the same.

MIUI 9 brings to Xiaomi users new features like Split Screen, Search for Apps, Dual Apps and a new assistant, accessible with a left swipe from the home screen.

There are plenty of design customizations and the Indian customers are in for a treat with special holiday cards in the Calendar app.

Android Mobile Secret Code:-

Technically sound something like hacking but not actually, Secret codes are not designed to hack your smart phone’s software. For Samsung devices, there are large numbers of secret codes for developers which are mostly used by several advanced users. These Samsung Galaxy codes are used widely to fix problems, debug and test the phone.

What is Secret Code(Samsung Galaxy Secret Code)?
Samsung check code or secret code is actually alpha-numeric character which is used in Android devices. One can enter Samsung mobile check codes using phone book dialer. It means check codes for Samsung will not work in any other brand like Sony, HTC, Nokia etc. So, it is important to use Samsung mobile check codes only on Samsung devices, not on other brands as it may be harmful and cause damage to other devices. Don’t experiment with such codes unnecessarily on other brands because it can alter the configuration of the device. Huawei Nova 2S Leaks Again With Slim Bezels And A Home Button

The Huawei Nova 2S leaked yet again, with one of its renders being shared by known industry insider Evan Blass earlier today. The image that can be seen above appears to correspond to previous sightings of the device that’s expected to compete in the upper mid-range segment of the handset market. The Chinese original equipment manufacturer seemingly opted to follow the latest design trends in the industry and deliver a smartphone with a tall screen surrounded by slim bezels, yet opted to differentiate itself from its rivals by retaining the physical Home button found on the Nova 2i that now barely fits onto the new handset’s bottom bezel. The same key is said to double as a fingerprint scanner, with the right edge of the phone housing a power button and a conventional volume rocker, both of which are depicted in the latest render.

The Huawei-made device now leaked in bright blue, presumably one of its official color options, though more traditional variants like black and gold are also expected to be offered by the company. While the Nova 2S looks similar to the recently launched Honor V10 manufactured by Huawei’s subsidiary, the handset isn’t meant to be a flagship offering but a compelling mid-range one, featuring the HiSilicon Kirin 960 and 6GB of RAM, as well as 64GB of internal flash memory expandable via a microSD card by up to 256GB. A Hybrid SIM setup is understood to be part of the package, allowing users to decide between having a second Nano SIM card or a microSD one in their device.

The Nova 2S is rumored to sport a 6.0-inch display panel with an FHD+ resolution of 2,160 by 1,080 pixels arranged in a tall aspect ratio of 18:9 (2:1). The dual-camera setup supposedly sitting on its back panel is said to consist of a 20-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel one accompanied by a dual-LED flash, whereas the slim top bezel of the mid-ranger should house a 20-megapixel module. The phone is expected to run Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 out of the box and will be officially revealed tomorrow, with Huawei already confirming its upcoming offering is launching on December 7th.

The Galaxy Note 8’s latest update introduces a VPN service

Samsung has added the ability to setup a VPN connection on its Galaxy Note 8 to help keep the phone secure when connecting to public and dodgy Wi-Fi hotspots.

Dubbed Secure Wi-Fi, the virtual private network (VPN) feature allows Galaxy Note 8 users to set up encrypted connections over wireless hotspots that mask their handset’s real IP address.

This not only keeps the smartphone out of the view of anyone who might be snooping on the Wi-Fi network, but can also allow users to get around network restrictions; for example some sites might be blocked in certain countries or through some hotspot providers.

A VPN can also make it appear as if you’re browsing the web from another country, which can allow you to access region-locked content; for example, stream Netflix US programmes while in the UK.

However, Secure Wi-Fi only offers 250MB of free and secure internet access though Samsung’s service, so it’s really designed to be a tool for making secure connections rather than access blocked and geo-locked sites and content. For that, you’ll need a proper VPN.

You can pay for a larger data allowance, which comes in at a reasonable €1.99 for a month’s worth of unlimited secure browsing.

Secure Wi-Fi isn’t a new service though, with SamMobile noting it’s been available on Samsung’s lower-end Galaxy J handsets, and that adding it to the Galaxy Note 8 via an update could come in response to the Krack vulnerability found in the WPA2 Wi-Fi security protocol.

It’s worth noting that there are a host of VPN apps and services available for Android that also offer secure Wi-Fi connections for reasonable monthly costs. But at least Samsung has now baked the option into its flagship handset, which should make it easy for anyone to setup mobile VPN.

Nokia 9 could arrive as early as January 2018

The Nokia 9 could show up as soon as January, bringing another flagship phone to the brand HMD has been revitalising.

The Nokia 9 is slated for a January 19 debut and will be supported by the reveal of an upgraded Nokia 8, or at least that’s according to information MyDrivers has got hold of.

If the date is indeed accurate, then the Nokia 9 could launch in the same month as the LG G7 and Samsung’s Galaxy S9, which would put it against some potentially very stiff Android smartphone competition.

Alongside the launch date, MyDrivers noted that the price of the Nokia 9 is set to be around £415, which is lower than previous price rumours which pushed the handset’s cost beyond the £500 mark. This would certainly give the Nokia 9 the edge in price over other rival flagships phones.

And for that price the Nokia 9 looks to be offering a fairly decent specification, with 5.5-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 835 chipset and dual rear cameras. Water and dust resistance rated at IP67 is also slated to be on offer. But like the Pixel 2 and iPhone X, the Nokia 9 is set to shun the 3.5mm headphone jack, opting to pipe audio via the USB Type-C port.

However, these specs are pretty common in a clutch of 2017 Android phones, so how well they will stand up to devices from Samsung and others, which will likely make use of gutsier processors and improved camera arrays, will have to be seen.

Huawei P11 camera specs leak – and we could be looking at a world-beater

The Huawei P11 will be the first smartphone to feature a triple-lens camera configuration, if a batch of promotional material prematurely shared by one of the firm’s creative agencies is to be believed.

It’s looking like the flagship P11 will tout a 40MP triple-lens camera, developed in partnership with German optics specialist Leica, complete with a five-times hybrid zoom. It should also sport a high-resolution 24-megapixel selfie shooter.

That’s only scratching the surface, though. The handset is tipped to feature an AI-powered imaging engine, capable of capturing “100% more light” in poorly-lit environments and processing images on a per-scene basis.

Here’s the photo as shared on Twitter by top mobile tipster Evan Blass, aka @evleaks.

Huawei Honor 7X hands-on

Honor 7X launching internationally

The Honor 7X has already been announced in China back in October, but of course – Honor and Huawei often leave a gap between its Chinese and Worldwide launch events. Today, the Honor 7X has been announced in London for Europe the US alongside the Honor V10. While the Honor V10 will get the most attention for its specs, we got a chance to take a look at the Honor 7X before the event and get a good first impression of the device’s hardware.

There is plenty to say about the Honor 7X’s hardware considering how much Honor’s “#X” series has evolved over the past two iterations. The Honor 5X was an excellent value while offering many features of flagship smartphones such as a metal-clad body, snappy fingerprint sensor, and amply-sized battery. The Honor 6X refined the overall design, but it still didn’t feel quite as premium as a more expensive smartphone.

Given the price range, the Honor has some very impressive hardware on its hands. Although the anodized metal uni-body design with rounded edges (a la iPhone 6) has been done many times, Honor has taken this design and figured out how to build it with a stronger and sturdier metal construction (no thin metal jackets) while keeping cost very low, passing the savings onto those who purchase one.

The current smartphone trend is headed toward displays with an 18:9 aspect ratio, which calls for smaller bezels and the added screen area allows you to see more of your social feeds and conversations. While 5.5-inch displays with a 16:9 aspect ratio was the golden standard for a lot of smartphone makers, the new trend is 5.9 to 6-inch displays with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Let’s take a look at the 7X’s hardware.

The Honor 7X’s display is 5.93-inches diagonally and features Full HD+ resolution. Honor calls its 18:9 display “FullView”. The front bezels are not as tight as we’ve seen on other devices, but still pretty darn small. The Honor 7X is identical in every dimension as the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, minus the length – the Honor 7X is slightly longer than the Mate 10 Pro.

Above the display is an earpiece and a front-facing 8MP camera. Under the display is an Honor logo, printed under the glass. Speaking of the glass, Honor didn’t explicitly say what kind of glass it is using on the 7X, so you’ll likely want to keep the factory protector installed to avoid scratching the delicate glass. The glass is subtly curved down into the frame of the phone, but not enough to call it “2.5D glass”.

This frame, however, is one of the sturdiest we’ve ever seen on a phone of this price range. In fact, the phone barely flexes under pressure, which confirms that Honor is using a high-quality structural design, a significant improvement over the structural designs of the Honor 5X and 6X, which were frailer in their designs.

Here’s some good and bad news: the good news is there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack, the bad news is the phone uses an outdated microUSB charging port. Considering that Huawei is really pushing the limits with a low-cost smartphone that includes an 18:9 display, we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Next to the microUSB port is a single bottom firing loudspeaker, we’ll assess its loudness in our full review of the Honor 7X.

On the back side is a very familiar construction: a metal uni-body design with rounded edges and antenna lines. By now, this design has almost tired itself out - and from the looks of it, the market is going to shift towards glass-sandwiches: a trend that Samsung started with the Galaxy S6 and has only just now made its way into Apple’s iPhones. It’s not to say it’s a bad design, but one that we’ve seen since 2014. Again, this is how the devices stay cost-efficient.

On the back is also a fingerprint scanner, one that Honor claims can respond in 0.25s. Our initial test has shown it to be consistently quicker than that of the Pixel 2 XL’s. Huawei has among the fastest and most accurate fingerprint sensors on smartphones.

The Honor 6X brought the dual-camera to this price bracket, meanwhile, the 7X’s camera gets a resolution bump. There’s a primary RGB 16MP sensor, which is used in conjunction with a 2MP depth sensor. The second sensor is used for bokeh-effects and helps in low-light situations.

The Honor 7X will go for just $200 (3GB+32GB plus a microSD slot) in the US, $50-less than the asking price for the Honor 6X at launch in the US. Do keep in mind that there is one real compromise: no NFC – so no mobile payments or Android Beam sharing. Other than that, you can get the experience of a smartphone in the $400 bracket for just $200.

The Honor 7X will be a tougher sell in Europe, however, due to its higher €299 starting price and its less-popular brand name.

First impressions
The 7X’s construction is amazing for this price-range. In fact, if Honor put a USB-C port in the 7X and asked for $259 ($10 more than the 6X’s original asking price), we’d still consider recommending it. Honor’s 7X comes with EMUI 5.1 out of the box, which runs very smoothly on the 7X. In the near-future, Honor will update the 7X to EMUI 8.0 (Android Oreo), which further refines the user interface and adds some of the software features from Android 8.0.

OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition heading for Europe, but you’ll need to call in a favour

The One Plus 5T Star Wars edition is coming to Europe, but unfortunately Brits aren’t in line to be One(Plus) with the force.

OnePlus has confirmed fans in Denmark, Finland and Sweden will be able to grab the special edition handset, which features exclusive design and software quirks.

Finns will even be able to buy the handset at the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the Helsinki Tennis Palace on December 13 (via Android Central).

The following day, online sales will commence, so if you know any Scandinavians it’s time to call in those favours.

The device was initially announced as an exclusive for the Indian market, but OnePlus expanding availability will give Star Wars fans a new hope they’ll be able to get their hands on the sought after handset.

Fantastic phone

The OnePlus 5T is the latest flagship from the popular upstart fir and is headlined by a 6-inch, edge-to-edge 18:9 display.

Like its slightly older sibling, the OnePlus 5, it’s powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor, with up to 8GB RAM.

In our review, posted earlier this month, mobile editor Max Parker awarded the phone a 9/10 score. He praised the OLED screen, slick software, excellent value and fast performance.

Deal: Save around $130 on Google Home 2-pack

Google’s voice-activated smart speaker Home has received a decent price cut in the US. Specifically, retailer Best Buy has the Home 2-pack listed for $129.98, which translates into savings of around $130.

So that’s basically a discount of around 50% on the Google Assistant-powered device. The promo is for a single day, which means those interested in availing it may have to act fast.

Samsung pours cold water on Galaxy S9 launch rumours

Samsung has poured a large bucket of water on the smouldering rumours that the Galaxy S9 will be revealed at CES 2018 in January.

The South Korean tech giant apparently told the The Korea Herald that the reveal of its next flagship phone at CES is “unlikely”.

This will be a blow to Samsung fans keen to see how it responds to the iPhone X and whether the Galaxy S9 will be a revolution or evolution on the design of the critically-acclaimed Galaxy S8.

Of course, “unlikely” is not a complete denial of the Galaxy S9 launch window rumours, so Samsung could be using misdirection to keep tech fans on their toes.

But if the Galaxy S9 is not revealed what can we expect to see from Samsung instead? Well there’s likely to be a bevy of new Samsung TVs touting the firm’s QLED technology for a start, and plenty of smart home devices as well – likely making use of Samsung’s SmartThings platform.

However, there’s a chance that the rumoured foldable Galaxy X smartphone could make its debut at CES, with SamMobile expecting such showcases to happen behind closed doors and away from the show floor.

A phone with a foldable, flexible display would certainly be something to inject some innovation into the smartphone world, and would go some way to curtail and disappointment at the Galaxy S9 remaining under wraps.

At the moment all this is just speculation, but rest assured that Trusted Reviews will bring you all the CES 2018 coverage you could wish for in the New Year.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 845, Xiaomi Mi 7 will have it

Qualcomm is holding its second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii. At the beginning of the conference, the chipset company announced the Snapdragon 845. Cristiano Amon, executive VP of Qualcomm Technologies was joined on the stage by Lei Jun, Xiaomi CEO. Jun said the next flagship the Xiaomi Mi 7 will be among the first smartphones, powered by the new SoC.

The Snapdragon 845 is built on the same 10 nm process technology like the current Qualcomm star - the Snapdragon 835. It will still support Gigabit LTE speeds thanks to the new X20 modem.

Detailed specs were not revealed, but Amon said they will be introduced today at a separate keynote. Previous rumors suggested four Cortex-A75 cores and four more Cortex-A53 for efficiency, accompanied by a new Adreno 630 GPU.

The Snapdragon 845 is most likely to follow the trends of implementing a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU). Huawei and Apple already introduced the Kirin 970 and A11 Bionic with native AI hardware acceleration .

During the same keynote, ASUS and HP officials said that in the early months of 2018 we’ll see the first portable computers that will support “all-day battery life and thin, sleek and fanless PC design, all while incorporating Windows 10".

The upcoming ASUS NovaGo 2-in-1 convertible and the HP Envy x2 detachable will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. They will run all usual Windows services like Hello, Cortana and pen input.

Lenovo is also expected to join the party with an ARM-powered device in the following weeks.

The future of marketing on cellphones is all about branded content over advertising

The future of advertising via people's cellphones is more about branded content – or ads that look like editorial articles – over internet display ads, a new report by researcher WARC suggests.

Businesses are still grappling with how to advertise to people via their phones, with 380 million mobile devices using ad-blockers worldwide. Consumers are blocking ads on their cellphones in greater numbers than on PCs, with 236 million desktop devices using the software, according to analytics company PageFair's most recent statistics, published in February.

More than half (55 percent) of the North American marketers WARC surveyed cited mobile-based branded content as a main focus of their marketing in five years' time, with 47 percent of those in the EMEA region stating the same.

Meanwhile, only 19 percent of North American marketers said mobile internet display advertising would be a focus for future marketing, and 25 percent of EMEA marketers said the same.

This is partly because of new cellphone screen designs, WARC reported. "This is likely to stem from the expectation that screens and devices will become increasingly suited for consuming longer-form content, with mobile-optimized websites the norm," it stated.

Businesses are also likely to be spending their marketing dollars on making sure their websites are high on Google mobile search results, with 33 percent of North American marketers predicting that this would be a focus in 2023 and 38 percent of EMEA marketers saying the same.

Going mobile

People are spending increasing amounts of time looking at websites on their smartphones. In 2012, the average amount of time people browsed online using their cellphones was 1 hour 17 minutes a day, and in 2017 that had risen to 3 hours 2 minutes daily, according to WARC.

TV is still the number one medium for advertising, with $138.3 billion spent this year, according to WARC data from 12 countries including the U.S., Brazil, China, Japan and the U.K. Advertising via mobile phones comes second, with $98.3 billion spent this year, ahead of desktop ads for the first time with $77.8 billion.

Marketers using other media for advertising are also experimenting with how best to communicate with people. Earlier this year, Viacom's Comedy Central TV channel started running two-and-a-half minute branded content spots once a month, instead of a series of shorter ads. It created a "Handy the Series," short comic skits in which different brands could feature. Viewers don't mind watching ads as long as they are entertaining, according to Chris Ficarra, Viacom Velocity's executive vice president of integrated marketing.

"Let's make them laugh," is the channel's approach, Ficarra told CNBC in February via email.

WARC's report surveyed 616 marketers from brands and agencies in North America and EMEA online for its Global Ad Trends report published this week. WARC also sourced data from research partners in 12 countries.

YouTube responds to the popular 'stories' trend from Snapchat and Facebook with a new product called 'Reels'

Google's video service, YouTube, is the latest tech company to adopt the "stories" format made popular by Snapchat and mimicked by Facebook
YouTube's Reels product is in beta-testing right now

Google's YouTube is launching a new product called Reels that mirrors the "stories" format made popular by Snapchat and mimicked by Facebook and Instagram.

YouTube made the announcement as part of an expansion of its Community tools for popular video creators. A select group of YouTube content creators will be now be able to put together multiple mini-stories that give their fans a more personal or "behind-the-scenes" look aside from the videos they upload.

YouTube's Reels doesn't look exactly like Snapchat or Facebook's "story" products -- only creators with 10,000+ subscribers will be able to use the product whereas anyone can create Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook stories.

But the move underscores YouTube's continued attempt to become more social and community-oriented. Those efforts feel particularly urgent as rival Facebook has increasingly pushed its own video product to users. While YouTube was once the only obvious place for burgeoning video stars to make their mark, Facebook's wide reach and willingness to invest in content has the social networking site into an attractive video platform.

YouTube parent company Google has long struggled with social networking in general: Its main foray into the space, Google Plus, ended up getting dismantled and built back up several times.

Reels will appear on the Community tab of a creator's YouTube page.

Here's what an early version of the product will look like for Creators:
